    What Is the Fairest Approach?

    Ticket sales, limited-edition drops, and other high-demand events all have one major issue in common: fairness.

    When tens of thousands of users click at virtually the same moment, sometimes within a fraction of a second, who should be allowed in first?

    Two Ways to Think About Fairness

    There are two main ways to determine the order in which users enter a service.

    First-Come, First-Served: Enter in the Order You Arrive

    This is the most intuitive approach.

    When the service opens, users are placed in line according to the order in which they access it and are then admitted sequentially.

    The idea that “I clicked earlier, so I should be ahead” is simple and easy to understand. This is why the first-come, first-served model is particularly familiar in Korea and widely used across domestic online services.

    However, the outcome is not always determined by click speed alone.

    System-level variables such as network latency, device performance, browser environment, and regional network quality can all affect how quickly a user’s request actually reaches the service.

    Randomized Ordering: Creating a More Equal Opportunity

    With this model, users who arrive before the service officially opens are first gathered in a pre-waiting room.

    At the scheduled opening time, everyone already in the pre-waiting room is assigned a randomized queue position.

    Users who arrive after the service opens are then placed behind those pre-waiting users in first-come, first-served order.

    This approach helps prevent differences in network speed or device specifications from determining the outcome.

    It also reduces the advantage of using macros simply to click faster, since arriving a fraction of a second earlier does not guarantee a better queue position.

    This type of approach is commonly used by major ticketing platforms in the U.S.


    The Blind Spot of Randomized Queues

    At first glance, randomized ordering may appear to be the fairest approach.

    If everyone who enters the waiting room in advance has the same chance of receiving a favorable position, it can help eliminate technical advantages and create a more level playing field.

    However, recent controversy shows that randomization alone does not automatically guarantee fairness.

    Ticketmaster, one of the largest ticketing platforms in the U.S., recently faced renewed questions about how positions in its waiting-room queues are assigned.

    The controversy intensified after Ticketmaster’s president stated that queue positions were not randomized in the way many users had believed. This led to speculation among users about whether opaque queue logic could advantage certain accounts, including large-scale or professional resellers.

    The issue highlights a fundamental weakness of any queueing mechanism: if the internal logic is not transparent to users and cannot be independently understood or verified, even a system designed to promote fairness can lose users’ trust.

    Ultimately, the mechanism itself is only part of the equation.

    What matters just as much is whether the system can be operated transparently and consistently enough for users to trust that the rules are being applied fairly.
